Friends Group Awarded £1000

£1000

The Friends of Sconce and Devon Park have received a check for £1000 from Newark and Sherwood homes following a successful application. The money will go towards paying for a new interactive nature trail around the park.

The aim of the project is to encourage children and adults from local communities to look, engage and understand the wildlife contained within the largest park in Newark. The park consists of varied habitats which are home to many species of native british wildlife and migratory birds. The trail will follow these diverse habitats and have an interpretation point at each area. The interpretation board will contain small snippets of information about the varied species in each location along with pictures encouraging the children to see if they can spot some of the wildlife. A brass rubbing plaque will be attached to each board so people can take a rubbing and collect these as they follow the trail.

Park to host OVO Tour of Britain

Nottinghamshire will host an entire stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, the UK’s premier road cycling race, this September as the event visits Mansfield and Newark-on-Trent for the first time. It is the only county in the Midlands to host one of the eight stages.

Wednesday 6 September will see 120 of the world’s top cyclists racing a 175-kilometre stage from Mansfield to Newark-on-Trent. The route will take in Eastwood, Hucknall, Gedling and the grounds of Newstead Abbey and the centre of Southwell.

After heading through Sherwood Forest and Clumber Park the stage will loop the north of the county and the towns of Worksop and Retford. The OVO Energy Tour of Britain will also pass through Harworth and Bircotes, passing the museum and memorial to 1965 World Champion Tommy Simpson in the latter.
